Coal reception and handling terminal in Lazaro Cadenas, Michoacan (Carbonser).

Carbonser, S.A. de C.V. is a consortium formed by GMD and Grupo Techint, each holding equal ownership interest, that started operations in 1999. The terminal supplies coal to the Plutarco Elias Calles thermoelectric plant in Petacalco, Guerrero.

The service agreement signed with the Federal Electricity Commission includes financing, construction, and operation for 30 years, with an investment of over USD 340 million.

With an installed capacity to handle up to six million tons per year, the terminal receives capesize bulk carriers, the largest in their class worldwide at close to 1,000 feet of overall length. Although they carry more than 140,000 tons of coal, they are unloaded in less than 80 hours, at an average rate of 0.5 tons per second.

Carbonser supplies coal to the Plutarco Elias Calles thermoelectric plant in Petacalco, Guerrero, which generates 7% of the country’s electricity.
